“BREADTAGS FOR WHEELCHAIRS”

PROJECT

Breadtags

Emalahleni Housing Company (EHC) through its community development subsidiary Likhaya Community Development Enterprise wishes to partner with you in support of the very worthy initiative of collecting and recycling breadtags to raise funds to purchase wheelchairs for disabled people who cannot afford them due to financial difficulties.

The “Breadtags for Wheelchairs” project is administered by the Polystyrene Packaging Council of South Africa (PSPC). This hugely successful project started in 2008 and has already touched hundreds of lives around the country.  Last year alone, wheelchairs were donated to 137 people thanks to the collection of breadtags by schools, businesses, old age homes, the Girl Scouts and co-ordinators volunteering their time and effort.

Bread tags consist of high density polystyrene and can be recycled into coat hangers, seedling trays, cornices, skirtings, outdoor furniture, poles and decking. Factories manufacturing polystyrene and other plastics consume less energy when they used recycled products, resulting in a cleaner, greener and healthier environment.

In light of the above, we urge you to collect your bread tags and deposit them into the collection boxes that have been placed at the entrances to our complexes, as well as our site and head office. We intend to roll out the project at underprivileged schools, amongst our staff members and amongst employees of our suppliers and service providers as well. Collection boxes have been placed at the schools that have agreed to participate in the project.

The good news is that your efforts will not go unrewarded. EHC also has a “Back to School” project and this year we donated 538 pairs of school shoes across 6 underprivileged schools in Emalahleni. Our next back to school project will focus on the donation of school bags/backpacks to underprivileged children. These school bags will be donated to the first 500 children who have collected the most bread tags. So when you deposit your bread tags into our collection boxes, please remember to write down your name, your child’s name or the name of a child that wish to sponsor, as well as your complex name, block number and unit number. Put this information together with the bread tags into an envelope or small packet and then throw it into the collection box. We will be keeping careful record of all collections and you will be informed by the end of the year if you are among the top 500 collectors! Staff members of EHC and its suppliers and service providers will not be eligible for a school bag/backpack, but their efforts will contribute greatly to this worthy cause.
